Your Vehicle's Warning Lights and What They Represent

We understand that seeing a warning illuminate on your dashboard is never a fun experience. You start to wonder if the issue is major, and whether or not you can continue driving your vehicle without it breaking down. There are various types of dashboard warnings lights that can indicate different things, and you may not be familiar with all of them. Understand what certain warning lights mean and how serious they are can help you know if the issue is critical or if you have more time to get your car into the shop.

Let's look as some of the most common vehicle dashboard warning lights, their meaning, and just how serious they are:

Battery Warning Light

You’ll recognize a battery symbol. This means your battery is short on charge, which could be caused by the battery itself or the charging system.

Engine Temperature Warning Light

The engine temperature warning light is shaped like a thermometer in the ocean. The meaning of this light is that your engine is running at a high temperature, which usually points to low coolant or a cooling system issue. This problem is critical, and you should get your vehicle into the shop as soon as possible to avoid engine damage.

Check Engine Light

Most drivers are familiar with the check engine warning light, which is shown in the image above. This light will come on if some component connected to your vehicle's engine is faulty. This problem could be small or big, so get your car into our experts at your earliest convenience so that we can run diagnostics and determine the issue at hand.

Tire Pressure Warning Light

Your tire pressure warning light will look like a tire with an "!" inside, or your car will alert you with text saying that one or more tires is 25% below the proper PSI. While this isn't a showstopper issue, it should still be taken care of quickly to avoid excess tire wear and putting yourself at risk for a blowout on the road.

ABS Warning Light

This symbol will usually say “ABS”. It indicates a problem with the Antilock Brake System, and will require a professional to take a look.

Now that you are familiar with some of the top vehicle dashboard warnings lights, you can be more prepared for when you see one of them turn on unexpectedly.
